As my first time ever leaving the country, this was one of my favorite vacations I have ever taken. When I think of vacations, my mind wanders to tropical destinations. During this family vacation, there were ample highlights. Staying at an all inclusive resort for the first time, we were able to try a wide variety of Mexican foods and drinks. While the resorts attempt to mimic American food, American food is better besides the fruit. Outside of the food, we spent the days relaxing on the beach. As a family, we partook in a trip to Dunn’s River Falls on a day trip and stopped along the way to ride a dolphin. If anyone is considering making the trek, Jamaica is a place of magnificent beauty and great fun. Time to get your relaxation to the maximum!
Listos! Vamos a Mexico! After visiting Cabo San Lucas and Puerta Vallarta, I have found two of my favorite destinations. Mexico is a well-known tourist destination, but just a heads up, it is important to be wary of the reviews. Some places are more kid friendly than others, and it was definitely an eye-opener in some aspects. The slight setbacks were made up for by the absolutely gorgeous views and relaxing days by the pool gorging ourselves with the all-inclusive buffet. These two vacations were highlighted by massages on the beach, ziplining over ravines and valleys, and scuba-diving in the Pacific Ocean viewing the various aquatic life while off the resort. The rest of the trips were mostly spent exploring the resort due to some safety concerns outside of the tourist region, but it is always fun to kick back and relax on the beach or poolside. It is definitely in my plans to go back for a perfect vacation full of stress relief, and if that sounds refreshing, I highly recommend booking a trip yourself.
If I am planning on going north for a trip, Canada is the place I want to go. I am an avid fisherman and I have gained an admiration for the natural beauty the country offers. After taking a fly-in fishing trip with my brother, my dad, and a group of men, I got the chance to experience life without the chaos of social media and limited social interaction. For those who have never experienced the glass-like view of a lake as the sun is rising without anyone else in sight, it is truly something to behold. Canada acts as a retreat in my life to refocus myself and enjoy time spent in nature with friends. It forces everyone to put down their phones and just enjoy each other’s company, which seems to be in limited supply these days.
My trip to Greece took place as part of an semester studying abroad at the American University of Greece in the fall of 2022. During this 15-week period from mid September to late December, I was able to attend classes on Tuesday and Thursday, and I traveled from Friday to Monday most weeks. These excursions included trips to Italy, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Portugal, and Spain, but more on those trips will be highlighted below. Strictly focusing on my time in Greece, I was able to explore a multitude of places! I took 4 day trips to the islands, such as Agistri, Hydra, Aegina, and Poros. As the winter approached, I rented a car and traveled inland to climb Mount Olympus, run the track of the first ever Olympians, visit the battle location from the movie “300”, explore the fortresses of Greece’s first capital Nafplio, and to discover the amazing monasteries of Meteora. When my family came to visit, we headed to the island of Santorini for a three day trip after showing them around the mainland. Greece is nothing short of amazing, and the memories I made from this semester abroad will be cherished forever.
My first trip out of Greece was to Italy where I explored Florence and Rome. Italy is full of extensive history and beautiful scenery, but you better buckle up since it is a tourist hot spot! I explored Florence for the first time, coming across the duomo, priceless artwork, and some delicious food. Italy is the country that I could spend the most time exploring in Europe because there is just so much to see. I plan on going back sometime, but I would prefer to go to countries I haven’t yet been to before returning.
Besides Ireland and Italy, Germany was the other country I really wanted to visit due to my heritage being majority German. This trip started on Friday where we went to Dachau concentration camp. It was truly a sad and surreal experience, and I would recommend visiting the country to see the history. We headed to the Hofbräuhaus our first night to see downtown Munich, and we called it an early night in order to make it to Oktoberfest in the morning. At Oktoberfest, we met up with a bunch of girls studying abroad in Italy, and we spent the day drinking beer and celebrating the German culture. We sang many songs together with the Germans, and it was the most comradery I have ever experienced in one place in my life. To wrap up the trip, we went to the BMW museum and toured the city using electric scooters. This was my second favorite trip while abroad behind Switzerland.
Ireland was one of the top countries I wanted to visit while abroad. I had a brief stop in London before meeting up with Elle in Dublin. The first night, we checked out one of the pubs that they are famous for. We headed to our Airbnb outside of the city using the bus system. On Saturday, it rained most the day, but we went to the Guinness Brewery and the Jameson Distillery to shield ourselves from the weather. Both were definite highlights of our trip. Besides Trinity College, the rest of Dublin was pretty underwhelming compared to other European cities. The Irish countryside was definitely the place to see, and we took a bus tour on Sunday to see the Cliffs of Moher and Galway city. We had some fish and chips, and if I ever go back, I definitely want to golf while in Ireland. Overall, it was a decent trip.
This was my first solo trip while abroad and happened completely on a whim over Halloween weekend. I met a new friend at the Flying Pig Hostel named Oliver from Canada, and we toured the city on both Friday and Saturday. We had a boat tour of the canals that was definitely a highlight. On Sunday, we took the train to the Hague to see the Peace Palace, the North Sea, the beach, the pier, and an impressive hotel. Amsterdam was an eye opening experience as drugs and prostitution are part of the culture, especially as my first solo trip in Europe. I enjoyed the food, the Stroop waffles, and I had my first lemonade in Europe that was not carbonated. It was fun to experience a new country that was so beautiful, but I definitely prefer trips with friends.
Paris was a dream come true. We started the trip off accidentally flying into the wrong airport. Out of all the places I went, Paris had the most difficult to navigate transportation system. It still wasn’t too difficult to get around as we started the trip off visiting the Palace of Versailles and walking the grounds. We ended the day watching the Eiffel Tower lighting up at night. On Sunday, we toured the Eiffel tower by going all the way to the top, and we walked the rest of the city to see all of the tourist attractions. The best food while abroad in Europe was in France, but it was a rather expensive place to live as well. I am hoping to get back to France some day to explore more of the less touristy areas.
Switzerland was my favorite trip while studying abroad. A group of 10 of us went to Zermatt to ski the Matterhorn Ski Resort in the Swiss Alps. It was my first time snowboarding in the mountains, and it was quite the amazing trip. Everywhere I looked, the views were breathtaking and unbelievable. Sadly, the first day was a massacre as one of my friends dislocated her shoulder, another friend fell off a small cliff, and to top it off, another friend had a hand injury. Only a small group of us snowboarded or skied on the second day, but it was the best snow I have ever been on in my life. After our time in Zermatt, we headed to Lucerne for a partial day before flying out back to Athens. While Switzerland is an expensive country, we saved a ton of money by going to Switzerland from Europe. I am hoping to go back sometime in the future, and I highly recommend making a trip for everyone interested in hiking or anything snow-related. It is by far the most beautiful country in Europe in my opinion.
As the first part of my final trip while abroad in Greece, I headed to Portugal to see the city. I spent the first night at the oceanarium before experiencing my first Chinese food while abroad. As a solo trip, I spent the second day exploring the city’s highlights. I went to the Church of St. George to start off the day, followed by the National Pantheon (where I got stung by a bee), the Praça do Comércio square where you could see a big arch called Bilheteira Arco da Augusta, the Carmo Convent (a ruined gothic church), my first Christmas market(smallest of the two) in the square with Praça Dom Pedro IV, sat and read for a while, and I finished at the second Christmas market in Eduardo VII park after passing the Marquês de Pombal statue. The second day, I met up with a high school friend Matt and his friends to visit the castle in Sintra. This was definitely the highlight of the trip, and I headed on to Spain afterwards.
As the second part of my final trip while studying abroad in Greece, I headed to Spain after Portugal to see the country for the first time. I flew in on Saturday morning, stayed in a hostel, and flew out Sunday night. While in Barcelona, I met up with my friends Marc and Patrick to see the Sagrada and try authentic Tapas(many appetizers as a meal). Spanish was the easiest language for me to understand, but the majority of people still spoke English. We visited many Christmas markets, many churches, and spent time at the bars in the surrounding area. On Sunday, I toured the Park Guell and hiked a mountain up to the Caramel Park for a great view of the city. If I were to study abroad again, I would definitely chose Spain as the place to be since the food is delicious and it is well connected by train to the rest of Europe.
Aruba was my last vacation while in school as a college student. We stayed at an Airbnb in Noord, which was on the west side of the island around the middle. The island is rather small, so we were able to see the entire island with our rental car. It was absolutely beautiful every day, but it was expensive due most things being imported to the island. We ended up renting a jeep to explore the rough terrain on the east side of the island and visit the various coves and caves, visited a lighthouse at the north end of the island, snorkeled on the west side of the island to see the infamous Antilla Wreck, and we took a sunset cruise where we used a rope to swing into the water. There was lots of great food and wonderful memories made.
By now, it is a common theme amongst my short trip reviews that these places are beautiful and you have to experience them for yourself. Yet, I have to say it again that Arizona is a place to add to the bucket list. My family traveled to Arizona in 2012 to visit family friends and to see the Grand Canyon for the first time as kids. The Grand Canyon truly is one of the 7 wonders of the world, and as Ron Swanson famously says, it is one of the only places acceptable to cry. During this vacation, my family and I visited Sedona, Phoenix, and Scottsdale. I got to see a real life-sized cactus, sit in a Jaguar convertible, see a live rattle snake, and hike on trails with numerous breath-taking views. In 2023, I took a summer trip with friends Max and Tyler to visit my brother and other friend Tyler in June. It ended up being very hot during the summer, but we were able to hike Camelback, go to a Diamondbacks game, go golfing at Papago Golf Course, and experience all that Phoenix had to offer.
For our trip to San Francisco in 2016, my family and I stayed in a house north of San Francisco in a place called Stinson Beach off of Highway 1. I vividly remember the windy highway making me sick to my stomach nearly every time we drove on it. The Golden Gate Bridge was a spectacle to feast your eyes on as the fog often shielded it from view in the early morning and when it finally broke the clouds in the afternoon. The prison called Alcatraz is located in the bay, and all of us were fortunate enough to tour it and learn about its history as being an infamous prison. The windiest road in the entire United States is in San Francisco that we got to drive our rental car down, and the temperature was very moderate the whole time we were there. We rented wet suits because the water was so cold without them, and I tested my luck in surfing the small waves on the Pacific coastline. If I travel back to California in the future, I plan on going further south for warmer weather.
If it is not a tropical vacation within the United States, I hope it is a vacation to Colorado. Colorado is one of my favorite places to travel to with friends and family. The hiking, mountain biking, jeeping, boating, shopping, and overall scenic environment is a must-have experience at some point in life. Back in 2021, I took a family trip with other family friends to Silverthorne near Lake Dillon to experience all Colorado has to offer. During our summer trip, we were able to visit Frisco, Breckenridge, and Denver. Earlier on in life during our RV tour on a separate trip, we stopped in Rocky Mountain National Park to see many animals and scenery and stayed in Estes Park. For those who ever stop in Estes Park, the hiking trails, the go-karts, and the donut shops are all wonderful places to experience. I have yet to visit Colorado in the Winter to snowboard or ski, but I know I will be back at some point in the future.
Florida is always a treat. Whether you visit Florida as a family, with friends, or as an individual, it is one of my favorite destinations that keeps me coming back. After visiting Cape Coral, Clearwater, Cocoa Beach, Dunedin, Fort Myers, Kissimmee, Marco Island, Naples, Orlando, and Tampa Bay, Florida is my most-visited state outside of the Midwest. To me, it is the perfect vacation as a tropical getaway. Most recently, Cape Coral has been our most visited. We have been fortunate enough to go deep sea fishing to catch a wide variety of fish(including sharks), go to the beach, get a birds-eye view while parasailing, ride mopeds, and experience a plethora of different eating establishments, all of which I highly recommend. Florida is a state to definitely put on the bucket list!
Illinois, as part of the Midwest, is a state I have been to more times than I can count. The trips to Galena are great day trips to experience a nearby historic town. Galena is a place to tour on the way to Chicago, the focal point of Illinois. Chicago is the place I associate Illinois with the most, and on the many trips there with family and friends, it is a different experience to see the windy city for the first time. The chance to watch the Chicago Cubs play, look down from the 101st floor in the Willis Tower, eat dinner at the top of the John Hancock building, visit the bean, and eat at various new establishments are all some of the pinnacle experiences Chicago provides. While I could never live here due to the traffic and the limited living space, it is always a treat to see Chicago for a weekend.
While many people often refer to Iowa as a flyover state in the heart of the Midwest, I get to call Iowa home. There are those who would like to leave Dubuque as soon as possible, I love my hometown. As a Dubuque native, I grew up divided between trips on the Mississippi River, going to our family farm in Zwingle, getting educated and playing sports at school, and enjoying life in what I would refer to as a “medium-sized city.” If one were to travel to Iowa, my favorite places to go would be Dubuque and Lake Okoboji. For fun in Iowa, people often joke going to walk around Walmart or just driving around are the only fun activities. I disagree, however, when it comes to Dubuque and Okoboji. While I often travel to Iowa City for Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball games, Cedar Falls for school, and Des Moines to see family friends, I have found the most enjoyment on the water. During a trip to Okoboji when I was a kid, we got the chance to go on the lake and participate in various watersports and go fishing. Similarly, the Mississippi offered many of the same opportunities growing up. After playing 8 different sports in high school and being what some would call a “jack-of-all trades,” I have had a wide variety of experience in finding what I love to do. Iowa is a place where you can do just that and focus on finding yourself and your various passions. For anyone thinking about traveling to Iowa, I would highly recommend it, especially those who enjoy the simplistic beauty of nature, the chance to get out on the lakes or the rivers, explore of the various caves and parks, visit amusement parks, or other places of personal interest.
In 2022, I got the chance to make a quick trip to Boston to watch my mom run the Boston Marathon. This was a short trip, but the history and the event itself were a surreal experience. The history correlates directly to the foundation of the United States, making the walk along the Freedom Trail all the more thrilling. Outside of the history, Boston feels slightly claustrophobic which was a feeling to get used to. As I explored the city while my mom ran the marathon, I recommend walking the Freedom Trail and trying Boston Clam Chowder if you visit, along with having a beer at the “Cheers” bar. For those wondering, my mom finished the marathon in just over four hours, and while I am not a runner, running a marathon is another item I added to my bucket list.
I have traveled to Minnesota many times for family vacations and once for a national Pi Sigma Epsilon(PSE) convention. Minnesota is nicknamed “The land of 10,000 lakes,” and the first time I went to Minnesota, I never got to see a lake. This was a family vacation to Mall of America. Mall of America is an whole trip experience in itself since I could walk around all day and still not even come close to seeing all of it. After our Mall of America trip, I was invited with my cousins to go to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area(BWCA) in northern Minnesota. The boundary waters motto is “leave no trace,” and the premise of the area is that you are only allowed to canoe without motors and backpack through the woods just enjoying the wonders of nature without leaving a trace. The Boundary Waters is a place of endless beauty and countless awestruck moments, but I would not classify it as a vacation. It is a full-fledged workout! When traveling from lake to lake on what is called a “portage,” everyone in the group must carry their canoes and hundred pound backpacks across land to the next lake. Once at the campsite, it is worth it, but the trek into and out of the BWCA is a sweaty experience to say the least. Switching to the most recent trip to Minnesota, I went with PSE, a co-ed fraternity at UNI, to a hotel in Minneapolis where we were able to compete in business competitions by day and explore the city by night. Minneapolis can be rather scary at night, but while sticking with friends, we were able to have a joyous time collaborating with each other in the city.
After driving through Missouri and hearing about it many times, we took a family vacation along with friends to discover St. Louis for a quick trip. We stayed in a hotel for a couple of nights, and we explored the city during the day. The highlights of the trip included riding up to the top of the St. Louis Arch, visiting the Anheuser-Busch brewery, and touring Grant’s farm. St. Louis was not as exciting to me since it is not far from home and many aspects of daily life are highly comparable to any big city life, it was still a worthwhile and cheaper trip to get out of Iowa and experience a new place.
Nebraska is just that: Nebraska. It is rather contrary to a bodacious experience to drive from east to west or vice versa. Nebraska is a state I have driven through a few times now, and it is rather flat with miniscule amounts of scenery. The only place I have stayed in Nebraska is Omaha in the fall of 2021 for a regional business conference for PSE. While staying downtown at the Doubletree hotel, the business conference took place during the day where a group of us were able to compete in competitions, participate in networking activities, and share in comradery with those around us. When leaving the hotel, the collective group got to experience the other local establishments native to Omaha and meet new people.
As a celebration for finishing 8th grade, I was able to choose a trip as a celebration. The trip I chose was traveling to Myrtle Beach with a friend and family to visit the beach and to further expand my travel experience. Reminiscing on this trip, it was a wonderful and relaxing trip to cap off middle school and to build on my life experience. I vaguely remember being astounded by the shear amount of waffle houses, the breath-taking view from the hotel room facing the ocean, and the friends met along the way. It was not my favorite tropical vacation due to the water not being as warm in the ocean as Florida, but it was a wonderful experience nonetheless.
South Dakota is what I would consider to be a fly-under-the-radar state, but it is another place that I was surprised by the immense beauty. As part of an RV trip in 2013 where we looped through South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, and Iowa, we were able to stop at The World’s Only Corn Palace in Mitchell, drive through Badlands National Park, and gaze in awe at the Mt. Rushmore National Memorial. Just down the hill from the Mt. Rushmore memorial, we stayed overnight at a campground. This was another first-time experience in my life of staying at a campground and this trip was also the last time I have stayed at a campground. Many people love to camp, but I find myself preferring vacations or trips to places on the water. If looking for a vacation rather close to home in the Midwest to experience national parks and history, South Dakota is the destination for to embark to.
In 2020, my family and I took a trip to Gatlinburg. While staying at an Airbnb, we were able to explore the town, which consists of touristy shops, a gondola ride to the top of a mountain to eat and explore, walking across an extension bridge with a gas bottom to look down, and ultimately just explore the Great Smokey Mountains while hiking. Tennessee holds a true beauty that I did not expect as depicted in some of the pictures above. We were also able to visit and explore Knoxville. I hope to go back in the future with friends to experience the western side of Tennessee, such as Nashville and Memphis.
In 2023, I took a work trip to Dallas for the Christmas party. While I did not take many pictures from this trip, I was able to enjoy going to the Toyota Music Factory, experiencing a Texas Diner, and exploring the surrounding area with coworkers. I look forward to other work trips in the future.
For our trip to Virginia in 2023, we drove to Norfolk with a group from the PSE chapter. We spent 4 days competing against other chapters for national champion status in various categories, such as top for profit project, top not for profit project, top social media strategy, top management team, and other individual competitions in sales, interviewing, and marketing. In our free time, we were able to go to the beach and explore all of what the city had to offer. It was a great experience to grow professionally, and we were able to experience the rich history and vibrant culture of Norfolk. We took a leisurely stroll along the Elizabeth River waterfront, enjoying the scenic views and the naval heritage from the awe-inspiring Battleship Wisconsin. Overall, our time in Norfolk was a perfect balance between competition and exploration, leaving us with lasting memories of this beautiful city.
When I think of a vacation in Wisconsin, the Wisconsin dells often culminate to the forefront of my mind. Wisconsin is another state I have been to more times than I can count, and while it has a great plenty to offer, it is not my first choice when I think of vacation since I am heading north rather than south. The Wisconsin Dells is another exceptional place for a weekend vacation, especially with young kids and friends. As I get older, I would rather explore and be somewhere tropical relaxing instead of the waterpark, but once again, it is a great place for a cheap vacation to take the kids. The Dells have been the most prominent in my memory when I think of vacationing in Wisconsin, but Castle Rock Lake is probably my favorite vacation taken with family and friends in 2017. We were able to get out on the lake, bond with friends and family through games and fun activities, and I was able to expand on my film development skills(as seen on my projects page).
